IT - Tips

  1. In Windows Explorer, it is possible to "Drag and Drop" a file or folder to another location. For safety it is a good idea to enable a verification message whenever this happens, to make sure that it really is intended to move the file or folder to its new location.

This setting is available in "Internet Explorer" and is selected from Tools, Internet Options, Security, Local Intranet, Custom, Drag and Drop or Copy and Paste Files, Prompt.

The other zones can also be set to Prompt. However the main zone of interest is Zone 0, which is "My Computer". For Windows 2000, this zone is usually not listed in Internet Explorer.

Therefore, a ".reg" file is available here for download. Right click on the file, select "Save As" and save it to the hard disk. Then double click on it in Windows Explorer to run it. The registry file will update the registry directly, changing Zones 0 through 4 inclusive, to "prompt" before moving a file or folder, including files located under "My Computer" (such as on C Drive).

If there is a security warning when the registry file is run, then it is possible to update the registry manually using "RegEdit" instead, for example it is possible to try and only update the HKEY_LOCAL_USER and not HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This is for advanced users only.
